The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of a few weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions of the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing to build it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and this week a study forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with the government.

As disorienting as it is to witness the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your coat you ought to provide him your sweater too.
The evident and direct fact that the Savior from scripture requests a form of radical love concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christianity rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
So I have been inspired to observe the persistent defiance against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided great solace to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags at every demonstration and requests to the best parts in US history.
