{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The alarming incident took place on the third rotation when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to replace his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two guys running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit track officials can be allowed to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Following a turn one incident, race control was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the FIA
"During the third lap, track officials were notified and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch officials were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was raised in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred after that point"
